It was December 2000. A few weeks before India’s largest amateur rock festival “Live Wire” at the annual college festival, Mood Indigo 2000, at IIT Bombay - India’s prestigious engineering college.
5 students: Bala, Basky, Suchit, Jitu & Anand, formed the first rock band and initially thought of the name as “Axis”. Soon, we felt there wasn’t the right thought behind the name and we needed to make it relatable. No wonder it was the name we quickly pivoted to, and thus began a legacy that has continued on campus since then.
Our first original song: Other Side, was written, composed and prepared that month right before the event.

Our debut performance was lined up at 8:30pm, perfect time for the audience and us. We were warmed up and ready to rock the stage. Then came the news that the slot was given to an external band and being the host college we were pushed to 11pm. We were upset at the change. We split up for a while and some of us went for a drink. As we reassembled, we got the news that the slot was pushed to 1am. We were mad. We wanted to leave the event immediately and withdraw on this foolishness of the event scheduler. Some of us went for a few more drinks. At 1am, Access Denied debuted with “Mama I am coming home”, “Knocking on heaven’s door” & the original rock ballad “Other side”. While the crowd cheered & sang on the covers too, it was a sweet surprise to see the crowd hum along the original ballad too with its unique melody.
Since that day, there has always been a Access Denied band on campus with changing talent. In this blog we will explore the story from 2000 onwards. We will also share more about the original band and what the team is now up to.
